The lessons that keep coming back from real home fires

There are no stories on this page, invented or borrowed. What there is instead is the short list of findings that turn up again and again in fire investigation reports and national analyses, and the single change each one asks of you.

Fire investigation is unglamorous and repetitive work, and the repetition is the useful part. Across tens of thousands of home fires a year in the United States, the same handful of circumstances account for a very large share of the deaths, and none of them are exotic.

What follows is written from published patterns rather than from any individual case. No names, no photographs, no quotes, and nothing dramatised, because a page of moving stories teaches less than a page of boring findings.

The alarm that was not there, or did not work

The National Fire Protection Association's regular analyses have found for many years that around three of every five home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms, or with alarms that failed to operate. Of the alarms that failed, missing, disconnected or dead batteries account for the largest share.

Change tonight: count the alarms, press every button, and note the dates on the back. The testing routine takes thirty seconds an alarm.

The nuisance alarm that got disabled

Behind a very large proportion of missing batteries is an alarm that went off during cooking, night after night, until someone solved the problem the fastest way available. The finding is not that people are careless; it is that a badly sited or badly chosen alarm reliably produces its own removal.

Change tonight: if an alarm cries wolf, move it, or replace it with a photoelectric or hush button model. Ten feet from the cooker is the target, and the fix is a purchase rather than a battery.

The room with only one way out

Reports repeatedly describe people who reached a window that would not open, was blocked by furniture, or had been painted shut years earlier by somebody else. The second way out is the one nobody checks, because nobody uses it in ordinary life.

Change tonight: open every window on an escape route, all the way, and fix the ones that stick. The two ways out rule is worth an evening.

Security bars without a release

Burglar bars, nailed screens and heavily secured windows appear again and again in fatal fires, particularly in older housing. They work exactly as designed, in both directions.

Change tonight: if there are bars, confirm the interior quick release works, that every adult knows where it is, and that it can be operated in the dark by someone who has never used it.

Cooking left for a moment

Cooking has for many years been the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States, and unattended equipment is the leading factor. Not a faulty appliance. Somebody left the room.

Change tonight: if you leave the kitchen, take the pan off the heat or take a timer with you. And learn the lid technique, because water on burning oil is how a pan fire becomes a house fire.

Smoking materials and upholstered furniture

Smoking materials have long been identified in national analyses as the leading cause of home fire deaths, well out of proportion to the number of fires they start. The reason is the fire behaviour: a cigarette in upholstery smoulders for a long time, produces a great deal of carbon monoxide, and often reaches its victims while they sleep.

Change tonight: smoke outside, use a deep ashtray with water in it, never near oxygen equipment, and never on a chair or a bed. This is also the fire that a photoelectric sensor detects sooner than an ionization one.

The heater three feet too close

Heating equipment is consistently among the leading causes of home fires, and portable heaters are heavily over represented within it. The common finding is proximity: bedding, curtains, laundry drying, a sofa, a rug.

Change tonight: three feet of clear space on every side of a heater, plugged straight into a wall outlet, off when you sleep and off when you leave the room.

The generator in the garage

In the days after a storm or an ice event, emergency departments see clusters of carbon monoxide poisoning, and the pattern is consistent: a portable generator run in a garage, a basement, a porch or too close to a window. Open garage doors do not make it safe.

Change tonight: if you own a generator, decide now where it will run: outdoors, at least twenty feet from the house, exhaust pointed away from every opening. And put a carbon monoxide alarm outside the bedrooms before the storm rather than after it.

Lithium ion batteries charging overnight

This is the newest entry on the list and the fastest growing. Fire departments in several large cities have reported sharp increases in fires involving e-bike and e-scooter batteries, often starting during charging and often blocking the only exit because the vehicle was charging in a hallway or by the door.

Change tonight: charge while awake, not overnight. Use only the charger supplied with the device. Never charge in a doorway, a hallway or a stairwell. Stop using any battery that has been dropped, damaged, or that has begun to swell, smell or discolour, and do not put it in the household waste.

The second trip inside

People go back in. For a pet, for a phone, for documents, for a child they believe is still inside and who is in fact already outside on the other side of the house. Investigation reports and news accounts contain this circumstance over and over.

Change tonight: agree the meeting point, agree that everyone goes to it, and say the hard sentence out loud to the whole household, children included: once you are out, you stay out, and you tell the firefighters who is missing. That sentence belongs in the drill.
